Poha is a popular Indian breakfast dish made from flattened rice flakes. It’s light, nutritious, and can be prepared in just a few minutes.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups poha (flattened rice flakes)
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup peanuts, roasted and chopped
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh coriander
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 cup water or milk
- Salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
Instructions:
- Wash the poha: Rinse the poha under cold water until it’s clean. Drain the excess water.
- Heat the oil or ghee: Heat the oil or ghee in a pan over medium heat.
- Add the spices: Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala.
- Sauté the onion: Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
- Add the poha: Add the washed poha to the pan and stir well to coat it with the spices and onion.
- Add liquid: Pour the water or milk over the poha and cover the pan. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the poha is softened and the liquid is absorbed.
- Add toppings: Stir in the roasted peanuts and chopped coriander.
- Season and serve: Adjust the salt to taste and serve immediately.
Variations:
- Spicy: Add more red chili powder or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
- Tangy: Add a squeeze of lemon juice or a drizzle of tamarind chutney.
- Nutty: Add chopped almonds or cashews.
- Vegetable: Add chopped vegetables like carrots, peas, or potatoes.
Enjoy your delicious and healthy poha!
