Poha Recipe: A Quick and Healthy Breakfast

Poha is a popular Indian breakfast dish made from flattened rice flakes. It’s light, nutritious, and can be prepared in just a few minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups poha (flattened rice flakes)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup peanuts, roasted and chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh coriander
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 cup water or milk
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon oil or ghee

Instructions:

  1. Wash the poha: Rinse the poha under cold water until it’s clean. Drain the excess water.
  2. Heat the oil or ghee: Heat the oil or ghee in a pan over medium heat.
  3. Add the spices: Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala.
  4. Sauté the onion: Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
  5. Add the poha: Add the washed poha to the pan and stir well to coat it with the spices and onion.
  6. Add liquid: Pour the water or milk over the poha and cover the pan. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the poha is softened and the liquid is absorbed.
  7. Add toppings: Stir in the roasted peanuts and chopped coriander.
  8. Season and serve: Adjust the salt to taste and serve immediately.

Variations:

  • Spicy: Add more red chili powder or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Tangy: Add a squeeze of lemon juice or a drizzle of tamarind chutney.
  • Nutty: Add chopped almonds or cashews.
  • Vegetable: Add chopped vegetables like carrots, peas, or potatoes.

Enjoy your delicious and healthy poha!
