Tandoori Chicken is a popular Indian dish that gets its distinctive flavor and color from being cooked in a tandoor, a traditional clay oven. The chicken is marinated in a yogurt-based mixture of spices and herbs, giving it a tender and juicy texture. The marinade typically includes yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, garam masala, cumin powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, ground coriander, lemon juice, and salt.
Ingredients:
- 500g chicken, cut into pieces
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- Salt to taste
Instructions:
- Marinate the chicken: In a large bowl, combine the yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, garam masala, cumin powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, ground coriander, lemon juice, and salt. Add the chicken pieces and mix well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Cook in the tandoor: Preheat the tandoor to a high temperature. Place the marinated chicken pieces on the skewers and cook in the tandoor, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and has a golden brown color.
- Serve: Serve hot with naan, roti, or rice.
If you don’t have a tandoor, you can cook the chicken in a preheated oven or grill.
Tips:
- For a spicier tandoori chicken, add more red chili powder or some chopped green chilies to the marinade.
- You can also add other ingredients to the marinade, such as chopped onions, tomatoes, or curry leaves.
- Serve tandoori chicken with a side of raita or mint chutney.
